What is health?
a state of physical and mental wellbeing
What are communicable diseases
they are caused by pathogens and can be spread to a person from another person, animal or object
Examples of communicable diseases
tuberculosis, flu, malaria, hepatitis, strep throat
what are pathogens
microorganisms which can cause disease
What are non-communicable diseases
diseases that cannot be transmitted from one person to another
Give an example of non-communicable diseases
heart disease, arthritis, cancer
Give three factors which can affect health
diet, stress, life situations
how does diet affect health
If you:
- don’t get enough to eat or the right nutrients, you could suffer from starvation, anaemia or rickets
- have too much food (or the wrong type of food) could lead to obesity, some cancers, type 2 diabetes
what can too much stress lead to
Higher risk of developing: heart disease, mental health problems, certain cancers
what type of life situations could affect health
- where you live
- gender
- financial status
- ethnic group
- level of free health care
- how many children you have
- local sewage and rubbish disposal
What diseases could you get as a result of your life situation?
- diarrhoeal diseases
- malaria
- heart disease
- cancer
How can diet cause obesity?
Eating a high-fat diet can lead to excess fat being stored in the body
How can drug use lead to HIV/AIDS?
The virus can be passed from person to person by sharing infected needles
How can poor water quality lead to diarrhoea liked diseases?
Drinking water is not treated so there are pathogens which cause diseases
