5 - Phased Array Antennas & Basic CW RADARs Flashcards
1
Q
Two ways to move the Beam
A
- Mechanically Steered Array (MSA)
- Electronically Steered Arrat (ESA)
- “Phased Array”
2
Q
Electronic Scanning
A
Pros:
- Beam can move instantaneously
- Fewer moving parts to break
- High Data Rates
- Instantaneous Beam Positioning
- No Mechanical Breakdown
- Increased Flexibility
- “Multi-mode” operation
- Fire Control
- Air/Sea Search
- Multi-target tracking
- “Multi-mode” operation
Cons:
- Lost efficiency at high angles off array boresight
3
Q
Basic Continuous Wave (CW) RADAR
A
- Continuously Transmits and Receives
- Requires Two antennas
- Cannot measure range
- Must have relative motion to detect
- Key component of this RADAR is the Mixer
