30 - Fragmentation Warheads Flashcards
What is Frag?
Kinetic energy of warhead pieces
Characteristics of an Isotropic Warhead
Spreads fragments evenly across a sphere
Sphereical spread diminishes NhitsIso
Characteristics ofa Non-isotropic warhead
Directs fragments into a non-spherical areafrom the warhead
CEP: Circular Error Probable (m) - used to predict frag impact points
What is CEP?
Circular Error Probable
Radius of a circle about the aim point inside which there is a 50% chance that the weapon will hit
What is Fragment Initial Velocity (V0)
A function of:
- Heat of explosion per unit mass
- Ratio of charge to casing masses
Metal Mass (M) - mass of casing
Charge Mass (C) - mass of insides
Configuration Constant (K)
Isotropic - 0.6
Directional - 0.33
What is Fragment Impact Velocity (Vs)
How hast the fragments travel after explosion
Velocity is always reduced by drag
Smaller surface area is better
Heavier fragment mass is better
