31 - Nuclear Weapons Flashcards
Two types of Nuclear reactions
- Fission
- Fusion
Binding Energy definition
Energy needed to separate nucleus into P+ & N
Critical Mass definition
Mass of sufficient size and density to maintain reaction
Levels of criticality
- Subcritical - # N goes down
- Critical - total # N is constant
- Supercritical - # N goes up
Gun type of Fission Warhead
Two subcritical masses forced together quickly while injecting N to form supercritical mass
“Little Boy”
Implosion Type of Fission Warhead
Sub-critial mass is made supercritical by reducing the volume of the mass
“Fat Man”
Fusion Warhead
A fission detonation triggers a fusion reaction
- Entire fusion fuel is consumed
- Extreme reliability and rapidity
Nuclear weapons effects
- Blast & Shockwave-50%
- Thermal Radiation-35%
- Nuclear Radiation-15%
- Initial-5%
- Residual-10%
Other effects:
- Flash
- EMP
Nuclear Weapon Uses
- Tactical
- Personnel - Strategic
- Area - Weapons of Terror
- Anything
What is a Biologic Warhead?
Uses bacteria or other agents for the purpose of causing sickness or death
What is a Chemical Warhead?
Designed to expel poisonous substances producing personnel casualties
Nerve damage, blindness, etc.
What is a Radiation Warhead?
“Dirty bombs”
Emits either alpha, beta or gamma rays from the warhead payload
