14 - Electronic Warfare Flashcards
What is Electronic Warfare (EW)?
Any military action involving the use of electromagnetic energy (EM) and directed energy to control the EM spectrum or to attack the enemy
Can be used to disrupt the enemy’s DTE Sequence
Three components of EW
- Electronic Attack
- Electronic Support
- Electronic Protect
What is ES?
Search for, intercept ID, and localize sources of EM energy
- Passive capability
- Counter detection ranges > RADAR detection ranges
Use of:
- Electronic Intel (ELINT)
- Communications Intel (COMINT)
Only provides bearing
What is EA?
Use of EM energy to degrade, destroy, or neutralize enemy combat capabilities
- Unpredictable
- Deny or deceive the EMS capabilities
Soft Kill EA
Active
* Denial Jamming
* Deception Jamming
Medium
* Expendables
Reflectivity
* Stealth, RAM, Film
Hard Kill EA
Destruction
* EM guided weapons to destroy enemy systems
- Home-on-Emitter
- Home-on-Jam
Types of Jamming
- Spot
- Swept-Spot
- Barrage
- Deception
What is Burn-through?
Range at which the strength of the target’s RADAR return becomes equal to or greater than the EA signal
What is Look-through?
“Pausing” jamming periodically to check our jamming
Determines own units jamming success
What is EP?
Protecting friendly assets from unwanted effects of EM spectrum use
EP Fundamental = Unpredictable operating parameters
Denial (Range) Jamming
Masks the target location with noise
- Spot, Barrage, & Swept-Spot
- “Burn-through”
- “Look-through”
Deception Jamming (Spoofing)
Provides the RADAR with false target location
- Angle deception
- Range deception
Repeaters or Transponders
