5. Motivation Flashcards
“Movere”
To Move
Three components to describe motivation:
Choice, Effort, Persistence
Choice, Effort, Persistence
- Choice = Direction
- Effort = Intensity
- Persistence = Duration of Effort
Driving Forces of Motivation
- direction (what we choose to do) and intensity (how motivated, degree of individual investment)
“carrot or stick”; carrot- what is in front? (push), stick- the push from behind (expectancy)
Motivation: Questions to Ask
1) How to initiate?
2) Why do people continue?
3) Why do people discontinue? Recall Martin & Horn (2013)
Approach when there are multiple motivations
- Approach-Approach (ex +/+)
- Avoidance-Avoidance (ex pick your poison)
- Approach-Avoidance
- Double Approach-Avoidance
Double Approach-Avoidance
Gives way to multiple possibilities because:
First three are simplistic, but variety of external factors can come in and reality of situations are quite complex.
Example:
Motivation & Participation
● Sense of ability
● Social acceptance
● Enjoyment
//
- developing sense of ability, or competence (including adopting certain identity)
- gaining social acceptance (social beings having sense of belonging very important)
-
enjoying one’s experience
— these are personal; drive sense of self and belonging
