Q

Diseases From Asbestos Exposure

A

Lung Cancer
- Malignant Mesothelioma: Tumor which lines the chest and abdominal cavity
- Mesothelioma: Rarely found except in those exposed to Asbestos, found 10-45 years later
- Asbestos combined with smoking drastically increases risk of lung cancer

Asbestosis
- Characterized by fibrosis of the lung
- Progressively worsening disease of the lung
- Disabling or even fatal occupational disease

Asbestos Protocol Types

A

Ship’s Force Protocol
- Repair and removal of materials that contain NON-FRIABLE asbestos containing material
- ALL Navy ships have non-friable asbestos

Emergency Asbestos Removal Team (EART) Protocol
- Minor repair and removal of FRIABLE asbestos containing materials
- All ships with. a keel laid prior to 1980n will have an EART

Q

Basic Principles For Controlling Hazards

A
  • Substitution: With less hazardous material approved under NAVSEASYSCOM
  • Engineering Controls: Isolation and Ventilation
  • Administrative Controls
  • PPE
17
Q

ASMP Inclusion Criteria

A
  • Designed to identify signs and symptoms of asbestos conditions through periodic medical evals
  • Placement into AMSP is based on previous history, current exposure or potential asbestos exposure
  • Placement is dependent on the IH sampling data and determination of the MDR
18
Q

Asbestos Workers Training Requirements

A
  • Emergency Asbestos Response Team (A-760-2166) is a 2 days formal course
  • Respirator Fit-Testing. Selection and Maintenance, conducted by Respiratory protection manager (RPPM)
19
Q

Asbestos Exposure Limits

A
  • Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)
0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter(f/cc) of air, 8 hour average exposure
  • Excursion Limit (EL)
    1.0 f/cc over 30 minute sampling period
20
Q

Asbestos Notification Requirements

A

Physician Written Opinion
- Completed on each individual Medical Conditions that would place the member at an increased risk
- Statement employee was informed of exam results and any medical conditions form exposure that require follow-up care
- Statement that employee is at an increased risk of lung cancer with smoking and asbestos exposure

21
Q

Removal From ASMP

A

Documented on SF 600

22
Q

Asbestos Record Retention

A

Contained at supporting shore medical activity for permanent retention, supporting. medical facility will have a file for each ship

23
Q

Documents for Inclusions into the AMSP

A

Preprinted SF 600 (Medical Matrix)
NAVMED 6260/5, PHA
Physicians Written Opinion
