Describe the first wave of immigration into the UK
Wave 1 - Post war migration
- A large labour force was needed to repair damage
- Act of Parliament (British Nationality act 1948) was created to enable free entry
- First ship – MV Empire Windrush (Caribbeans settled in Brixton)
- 3 million later arrived, later settling and growing families.
Describe post war integration and how commonwealth immigrants settled
Indian: around Neasden / Southall – building small shops / restaurants
Caribbean: working in public transport
Pakistani: urban industrial areas
Why did the 1970’s recession cause issues for BAME communities
- Huge industrial problems, many jobs lost to overseas companies.
- Resentment grew towards ‘BAME’ – with poor policing not tackling the growth of gangs.

Describe the second wave of immigration in 2004
Accession 8, 2004
- A8 migration from newly joined EU countries, typically working in agricultural / low-paid sector jobs
- Settled families are entrepreneurial with thriving economies in former de-industrial towns, e.g. Crewe.
- By end of 2017, 3.8mn people living in the uk were from other Eu countries
What 5 threats were created post 2008 recession
1) Unemployment means resentment builds
2) Rise of nationalism (fuelled by post-industrial economy change)
3) Curbs on migration (points based system)
4)Ongoing trafficking and illegal migration
5) Huge birth rate increase
Describe immigration post brexit (2020)
1) work and study visas (permits) are easier to obtain, particularly for Kenya, Pakistan, Zimbabwean, Indian, Nigerian and Filipino migrants (overall: nursers, coders, students).
2) Less skilled labour is harder to access from overseas.
