4b.1b Flashcards
Describe the rural urban continuum of the UK
- 80% of the UK population live in urban areas (i.e.over 10,000 people)
- But only 10% of uk land surface is urban
- so large chunks of uk is sparsely populated
What is N antrim
accessible/remote rural area
Describe N antrim
- including key locations, scenic areas, connections and religious background
AONB (1988)
Basalt Plateau
Beautiful coastline includes Giants Causeway UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rathlin Island,
Key locations also include Ballintoy (Game of Thrones) and Bushmills (Whiskey) and Royal Portrush (Golf Open)
Connected to Belfast by M1 and A26
Predominantly Protestant
How does population structure vary within the rural-urban continuum
Younger in urban areas (reurbanisation)
Older in rural (rural depopulation)
How does density vary within the rural-urban continuum
- Urban: estates: e.g. Britwell / Langley Demand / popularity (e.g. Upton / Heathrow)
- Greenbelt limits often protect accessible rural
- Isolated settlements characterise remote rural
Why do population structure and density vary wihtin the rural urban continuum
accessibility, physical factors, historical development and role of planning
How does accessibility affect pd and ps
1) Slough: M4 / M25 / M40 / Heathrow. GWML to Paddington
VS
2) Belfast: the M1/2/3 meet
VS
3) there is only a 1 track railway to N Antrim coast…
…yet: A26 connection from Belfast / N Antrim coast was doubled in 2016 facilitates travel.
How does physical geography affect pd and ps
1) Both Slough and Belfast are bit on flat land. Slough is inland, but Belfast is at the apex of
Belfast Lough, connected to the Irish Sea.)
VS
2) N Antrim Coast: more rugged terrain, but coastal erosion creates stunning landscapes for filming / history / preservation / tourism.
How does history/landscape affect pd and ps
Some towns like to preserve culture (e.g. Bushmills Distillery / Royal Portrush) and also UNESCO World Heritage Site Causeway Coast.
Others struggle with sectarian tension.
How does planning affect pd and ps
1) Governments can choose to invest in previously rural areas - E.g. 1960s ‘New Towns’ and ‘Garden Cities’, e.g. Bracknell.
2) Other opportunities caused investment, E.g. Golf Open on the Causeway Coast
