4b.5c Flashcards
Why are rural places often percieved as idyllic
due to their tranquility, natural landascapes and historical and cultural associations
- causeway coast
History of causeway
Bronze Age settlements / Scottish Sea Kingdom of Dalriada
Regularly invaded by Vikings, many shipwrecks
What are the negatives (myth of idyll)
1) Elderly marginalised, community services in decline
2) Traffic congestion and pollution from tourism
3) Seasonal unemployment
4)Accessibility to tourists changes the notion of ‘safe’ (e.g. Park/Ride, Bus stop on the Causeway)
5) Overlapping traditions and sectarian divides
Assets in the causeway (the idyll)
1) Beautiful rugged coastline
2) Giants Causeway: Basalt plateau and columnar jointed raised beaches, inspiring the story of Irish Giant Finn McCool
3) Increasingly prosperous for some, but still marginal agriculture and fishing / mining / kelp harvesting and potato + beef farming
4) Small (active) historic / plantation towns, e.g. Old Bushmills Whiskey
What is the issue with hosuing in the idyllic rural
Housing is a major issue as costs are high and wages often low. Some schemes try to ring-fence housing for local people, e.g. Hastoe housing in Hampshire and Dorset.
How ot recent arrivals react to the idyllic rural
Recent arrivals object to mud, smell and tractors early in the morning and no mobile/slow wifi connections (parts of West Midlands and Warwickshire)
What is the sutbbornness in the idyllic rural
- Fox hunting, fishing and shooting may be part of the way of life for many in rural areas, who are therefore resentful of any who object (e.g. Oxfordshire)
- More recent retired arrivals may want to preserve or “fossilise” a long gone way of life, and be unwilling to accept change.
How do ethnic groups react to the idyllic rural
Ethnic groups may be small and have varied reasons for choosing to live in the chosen area, with multiple reasons for their views.
What is the reaction of older/long term residents to the idyllic rural
Older/longer-term residents may realise that change is necessary as traditional employment has declined and a community has aged.
