4A/B Manufacturing processes and systems Flashcards
1
Q
What is JIT (just in time)?
A
- a STOCK-CONTROL system
- ensures fabric and components arrive at the factory just as they are needed to go on the production line
- aims to get products to shops as soon as possible and as they are needed
2
Q
Features (JIT)
A
- gives information about: the materials/components needed and at what stage of prod. they are needed
- whole process is controlled electronically using barcodes (read by scanners at each stage and information is stored on a central computer system)
- monitors outputs
- little stock is kept in warehouses
- regular deliveries from supplier
- materials/components arrive and are used almost immediately on the production line
- stock is bought in quantities
3
Q
Advantages (JIT)
A
- tracking product/stock means that up-to-date stock information can be seen
- saves on storage, warehouse and worker costs
- minimises waste/energy: the computerised system controls stock levels
- allows manufacturers to respond quickly when fashions/trends change: flexible working practice
4
Q
Disadvantages (JIT)
A
A delay in delivery could suspend the production line:
- increased costs (e.g. energy/wages)
- lost revenue (e.g. cancelled orders/ missed deadlines)
