1F Ergonomics and anthropometrics Flashcards
Define ergonomics
The interaction between the human body and products, based on applying scientific data about human beings to the design problem
If a product is ergonomic, what does this mean?
The product is:
- easy/safe to use
- comfortable to use/wear
- shaped to suit the user
- sized/shaped to suit the function
Define anthropometrics
Using body sizes/measurements to improve the ergonomics of products, in order to achieve successful designs
The relationship between ergonomics and anthropometrics
Ergonomics incorporates the use of anthropometric data when designing to improve the user experience (e.g. size, weight, shape, components)
How is anthropometric data used?
Data is used to help designers:
- find average sizes (between 5th and 9th percentile - 50th percentile)
- create products that are compatible with the human body
What does the BSI do?
The BSI sets standards, testing procedures and quality assurance processes to ensure that products fulfil the safety and quality needs of customers and the environment
