What is piping used for?
A
Used to define shape(detail)/add decoration/add strength to an edge or garment

What is piping cord made from?
A
Cotton/polyester, in a range of thicknesses depending on the product (cotton cord should be shrunken before use)

Process (piping)
A
- wrap the fabric/bias binding over the cord
- pin as closely to the edge of the cord as possible
- stitch the cord in place using a zipper foot
- sew the piping between two pieces of fabric (right sides facing inwards over the piping)

Why is interfacing used?
A
Used to give the product strength/crispness/shape or prevent fabrics from stretching (before the construction/decorative process)

What is interfacing used for? (examples)
A
- collars/cuffs (gives shape)
- shoulder seams
- underneath embroidery (added strength and body)
- in waistbands (prevents stretching)
- behind fastenings (strengthens the fabric)

Types of interfacing fabrics
A
Comes in a variety of weights/types:
- knitted
- non-woven (no grain)
- woven
- sew-in
- iron-on/fusible: coated on one side with a heat-sensitive adhesive
