PURPOSE:
To establish a safe and effective practice of removing toxic particulates from equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) after exposure to products of combustion. This procedure will aid in reducing firefighter exposures and subsequently have a positive short and long term health impact.
ON SCENE GROSS DECONTAMINATION POST FIRE
Overview
The definition of Decontamination (Decon) is to make safe by eliminating or reducing _____ or otherwise harmful substances, such as ___ chemicals or ____ materials.
There are two types of Decon:
• _____/Gross Decon
• ____/___ Decon
The Decon process described in this SOG strictly refers to a Gross Decon following exposure to productions of combustion. This procedure shall be ______ and orderly.
The Gross Decon process shall be utilized on all fires where ____ is worn and exposed to products of combustion. This shall include (but not be limited to) brush fires, vehicle fires, ____ fires, and/or any other emergency or ___-____ incidents where the combustion process occurs.
The marking of ____ isolation or ____ zones may not occur at every fire incident. All personnel should be aware that isolation or control zones still ___. The following zones shall be defined on all fire type incidents:
1. HotZone
• Any area with ___ risk
• Any area within the ____ perimeter of any fire or products of combustion (which include smoke and soot)
2. WarmZone
• The area between the Hot and Cold Zones
• The area not in the immediate ____ of any fire or products of combustion
3. ____
• A ____ area within the Warm Zone, preferably ___ of the Hot Zone but ___ of the Cold Zone
• ___ Decon and cleaning of the body using ___ wipes shall take place within the Drop Zone
4. ColdZone
• Any area without risk
• Any area outside of (and ideally ___/___ of) the Hot and Warm Zones

Preparation
Personnel shall be ready at all times to implement these protective procedures. Personnel may find it beneficial to assemble and maintain a personal “__-___” that can be accessed after any incident where they’ve been exposed to harmful substances. Recommended items would include: clean uniform, ___, towel, __ __, etc.

Gross Decon Setup
Generally, Gross Decon should be set up by the _____ of the ___ arriving suppression apparatus near an area where crews will be ____ the Hot Zone.
As per SOG 406, Structure Fire/Signal 25, the second-arriving engine shall approach the scene only as far as the closest hydrant, confirm that the hydrant is operational and flow is sufficient, and await instructions from Command. ____ shall notify the second- arriving engine whether they should lay a ___ line or ___ in to the fire to ___ as needed. Upon proceeding in to the scene, the ____ of the second-arriving engine shall ____ the Engineer to set up ___ Decon.

It shall be the responsibility of the first arriving ____ ___ to assure that Gross Decon is established and to oversee the Gross Decon area and process.
The Engineer of the ____- arriving suppression apparatus or Decon assignment shall ensure that the apparatus tank ___ or any water used in the Decon process is from a ___ municipal (hydrant) water source and is not ____ or contaminated water.
The Gross Decon area shall be designated by deploying a ____ cone and an ____ Decon ___ Line. The Decon Hose Line shall consist of a ____-style hose and ___ pressure ___-style nozzle. This setup is ___ as it will provide flushing with high flow water but ____ pressure. If necessary, a ____ line and nozzle may be used in place of the approved Decon Hose Line, however extreme caution should be taken to use only at __/__ pressure so as to avoid further embedding toxins into fabric. To facilitate Gross Decon of multiple personnel, the use of additional Decon Hose Lines from other suppression apparatus in ___ proximity is encouraged.
The Decon Hose Line and nozzle will be __-___ in a designated Decon __, which will be located on each ___ apparatus. The crew of each apparatus shall ensure that the Decon kit is fully ___ and ___ for deployment at all times.

Gross Decon Process
All fire personnel that were exposed to products of combustion shall perform Gross Decon ___ to entering Rehab or ___ the incident scene. After exiting the Hot Zone, crews shall ___ on air when possible and report ___ to the designated Decon Hose Line.

Personnel shall rinse off debris and products of combustion in a ____ and ____ manner from the __-__ down; being mindful of higher potential collection points such as the ___ and ___ areas. Personnel shall be careful to refrain from spraying water ___ the collar-line so as not to saturate the ___ lining of the PPE. The goal is to keep the PPE ____ dry on the interior but rinsed as cleanly as possible on the exterior.
After the ___ rinse, personnel shall conduct a ___-___ Decon using the __- __ brush and ____detergent/___ solution, again working in a systematic and thorough manner from the collar-line down. This wet-soap Decon process has been shown to remove up to __% of contaminants on PPE.
Follow NFPA ___ and the ____’ recommendations when cleaning PPE.
After a ___ rinsing of the exterior portion of the PPE, personnel may go off air and proceed to the ___ Zone where they will doff their PPE. It is important to note that the PPE is still considered to be ____ at this stage; therefore it is recommended that personnel use care when removing PPE to ___ further contamination of exposed skin during the doffing process. All PPE and equipment, including ___ ___, shall be left in the ___ Zone.

The Drop Zone shall be located in a ____ area within the ____ Zone, near the ___ area. Whenever possible, the Drop Zone shall be __/___ of the Rehab area due to __-__ PPE, but ___/___ of the Hot Zone and Decon area due to smoke and ___ runoff.
When available, there will be ___ buckets for washing of SCBA facemasks utilized within the ___ Zone area:

Reporting to Rehab
Personnel that report to Rehab shall first go through the ___ ___ process. Personnel shall ___ all PPE in the Drop Zone prior to reporting to Rehab. At no time will dirty PPE be allowed into the clean environment of the Rehab unit/area.

Reporting for Assignment
In the event that crews are called from Rehab back into operations, they shall re-don their PPE and report ready for assignment as requested. If any new assignment involves further exposure to products of combustion (i.e. ____, ___ Search, retrieving ___ lines, etc.), the crew shall ___ the Gross Decon process as stated above.

Released from the Scene
To keep the cab of the apparatus as clean as possible and to avoid transferring toxins and harmful products back to the fire station, it is extremely important to perform the Gross Decon process prior to leaving the incident scene.
Once released by _____ and ___ to leaving the scene, all PPE (with the exception of the ___ and ___ ___ ___) shall be ___ at the scene using ___ issued trash bags. The bag opening will be closed and/or ___ securely to minimize __-__ in the apparatus cab. In the event of another fire prior to returning to quarters, this bag can be easily ripped open, facilitating PPE use.
All other equipment (__ __ __, SCBA __, air ___, tools, radio __, etc.) will be thoroughly cleaned using an __ detergent/___ solution and __-__ brush. Portable radios and other ___ equipment may be cleaned with ____ approved ___. Once these items have been cleaned, they may then be loaded into the apparatus cab.
Personnel should don ___ gloves prior to handling equipment to avoid any further skin ___ during the cleaning process.

Overview
All personnel exposed to the products of combustion, or any potentially harmful chemical (or biological) toxins, shall complete a full ____ Decon as soon as possible after the exposure. Crew members will Decon ___ and ___, and “shower within the hour”.
Showering within the hour shall be a ___ and units returning to quarters will no longer check back on “___” status. The ___ code “___” shall be used and will give crews ___ minutes in an “__ __ __” status. After 45 minutes, the unit will ___ be placed back into service by the ___. This only applies to units ___ to ___ fires and only for those units ___ by Command as returning to quarters to shower. All other units will continue to check back using the ___ disposition. The ____ ___ is authorized to place the unit back in service ___ to the end of the 45 minutes if Decon is ___. After a disposition code “Delta”, the following minimum steps shall be taken immediately upon arrival at the fire station:
• Perform a more ____ Decon of equipment (__, tools, etc.) following NFPA ___ and ____’ recommendations

Ability to Respond
A clean, 2nd set of PPE shall be placed in a state of ____ prior to ____ the unit to service. Contaminated PPE shall be ____ and washed in an extractor per manufacturers’ recommendations. If an extractor is not available at your station, the PPE should be ___ and transported to the nearest extractor for washing or left in bags for washing by the _____ shift.
