434 Flashcards
PURPOSE Establish standard procedures within the JFRD for operating portable radios in conjunction with Communications S.O.G. #401, which is the JFRD’s guideline for radio communication. The primary reason for issuing a radio to each seated position is the \_\_\_\_ of our members. Equipment The standard issue for the JFRD is the \_\_\_\_ \_\_\_ \_\_\_. A radio will be issued for each seated position in all Fire apparatus and Rescue units in the JFRD. RADIO ASSIGNMENTS: The seats on JFRD apparatus and the associated radio designations are numbered as follows: • Engines o Officer-\_\_ o Engineer-\_\_\_ o Jump seat behind Officer-\_\_\_ o Jump seat behind Engineer-\_\_ • Ladders o Officer-\_\_\_ o Engineer-\_\_\_ o Jump seat behind Officer-\_\_ o Jump seat behind Engineer-\_\_ o Tiller-\_\_ (if applicable) Radio Designation SCBA Unit # 1 Unit # Portable 2 or \_\_\_\_\_ 2 Unit # Portable 3 OR \_\_\_\_\_\_ 3 Unit # Portable 4 or \_\_\_\_\_ 4 Unit # (i.e., L-10) 1 Unit # Portable 2 or \_\_\_\_ 2 Unit # Portable 3 or \_\_\_\_ 3 Unit # Portable 4 or \_\_\_\_ 4 Unit # Portable 5 or \_\_\_\_ 5 • The Tiller position will always be number 5 regardless of how many personnel are assigned to the ladder. • Rescues o Officer-1 Unit # (i.e., R-23) 1 o Engineer-2 Unit # Portable 2 or Engineer 2 • The SCBA on the apparatus are also numbered according to the position/seat This system is necessary for identification purposes in FRCC. When FRCC receives a transmission from a portable radio, it will be identified by its \_\_\_\_\_ number.

SEAT POSITIONS:
Chiefs’ portable radios will retain their respective car number (i.e., Fire 1; Fire 5)
Portables used by the Officer or person in charge will retain the ___ number. Example: “Ladder 18 Portable 2 (or Ladder 18 Engineer) from Ladder 18” or “Engine 150 Portable 3 (or Engine 150 Nozzle) from Brush 50.”
The radio positions are listed above to distinguish who is communicating on the radio. For the safety of all personnel, each member must always carry the radio ___ to his or her seated position.
NOTE: Radio positions/Seat names are at the discretion of the ____ ____. THE RADIO ITSELF WILL ALWAYS CARRY THE SAME NUMBER.

Daily Check
• Treat the portable radio as you would your SCBA. IT IS PART OF YOUR P.P.E. AND YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT!
• If your radio is dirty, clean it with a ___ ___ and immediately dry it. DO NOT SUBMERGE IN WATER OR USE RUNNING WATER
• Ensure that the proper portable is located at your seat position. The portable number should match the seat and SCBA number. This is very important because this assists with _____ on the fire ground
• Check for physical damage. If the portable is damaged, report it to the _____.
• Check the on/off knob for proper function, check the channel knob for proper function and place it on “2,” and check the small A/B/C flight toggle switch for proper function and place the switch on the “A” flight. Recognize that when the radio is turned on, you will be on “A2,” the normal talk group. Change to the proper flight/channel according to the type of call. (See Communications S.O.G. #401 for
proper channels)

Operation
With the addition of portable radios for all members, the JFRD will become a safer, more efficient fire and rescue department. ____ will be the key. The intent of assigning each position a radio is NOT to give that member the freedom to talk on the radio; rather, it is to allow him or her to monitor fire ground activity. The _____ _____ will be the primary voice for the company. Use of all radios will be strictly monitored.
• While responding to the call, the ____ shall ensure that all crew members know the proper flight and channel being used for the response

OIC
• When on the main fire ground “B” flight channels, such as “B1”, ____-____ communication will normally be performed by a more efficient face-to-face method. If necessary, this communication may move to another channel, such as “B2”, but only after notifying the ____ ____ of this change
• BE PROFESSIONAL AT ALL TIMES!
• When communicating on the fire ground, ___-___-___ communication is the best
practice
• Know and understand the positions of the knobs and switches on the radio
• On the top of the radio near the ___ and ____ knobs is a _____ orange button. This is the Emergency Assistance Button. When depressed, this button ___ the channel down and opens the microphone. This button can be used if a MAYDAY situation occurs. If the Emergency Assistance Button is activated, FRCC will ask, for example, “Engine 1, Portable 3, situation under control?” If under control, you will acknowledge FRCC and be asked to reset the portable by ____ the orange button and holding for __ seconds. FRCC will confirm the radio is reset
• Know the “MA YDA Y” procedures (listed below)
• When transmitting a message, use the following procedures. For example: “Engine
1 FROM Engine 1 Portable 2 (or Engine 1 Engineer)” or “Ladder 1 Portable 2 (or Ladder 1 Engineer) FROM Ladder 1 Portable 4 (or Ladder 1 Hook).” This method eliminates confusion
• Consider what you are going to say before transmitting
• Understand the difference between URGENT and MAYDAY. Urgent messages are used for ___ ___ discovered by any firefighter during an event. MAYDAY
is reserved for ___ ___ situations
• If possible, move away from other radios when transmitting
• Hold the microphone __ to __ inches from either your mouth or your SCBA mask
speaking diaphragm and key the microphone for 1 to 2 seconds before speaking.
Then speak clearly and slowly using your normal voice
• Keep messages concise
