4.4 active transport Flashcards
1
Q
active transport definition
A
the movement of molecules or ions or out of a cell from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration using ATP and carrier proteins
2
Q
describe the process of direct active transport (4)
A
- molecule or ion binds to receptor sites on the carrier protein
- ATP binds to the protein causing ATP hydrolysis and protein changes shape
- molecule or ion is released to other side of the membrane
- pi released from protein which causes shape to change back to its original shape
3
Q
what is co-transport?
A
ATP used to individually move molecules using a concentration gradient which has already been set up by direct active transport
