What was the Treaty of Blois 1572?
This was a mutual defence treaty between France and England vowing to help each other if one was attacked by another power.
This helped protect England from the growing threat of Spain but was limited, as France would ally with Spain via the Treaty of Joinville
What was the Treaty of Berwick 1586?
Elizabeth and James VI of Scotland signed a mutual defence treaty which granted James £4000 a year from England.
This reduced the chance of a Scottish rebellion and reduced the power of the Auld Alliance.
What was the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587?
Mary Queen of Scot’s was beheaded after Elizabeth passed her death warrant following the Babington Plot of 1586.
This removed the Catholic figurehead for a replacement to the throne but caused Spain to retaliate by launching the Spanish Armada.
What was the result of the Spanish Armada in 1588?
England defeated the Spanish Armada in only nine days, forcing the Spanish to retreat. Any other attempts to launch an Armada failed due to storms at sea.
This severely weakened the economy of Spain, which posed the biggest threat to England at the time and increased England’s military reputation with the rest of Europe.
