2.6 Henry VIII's Religion Flashcards

1
Q

How was the murder of Richard Hunne in 1514 significant?

A

Richard Hunne was found dead in his cell in the Bishop of London’s prison. The church tried to play it off as suicide but the jury believed that to be impossible and instead a clumsy murder cover up.

This case was disastrous for the reputation of the Church, showing its corruption. This was probably the start of the want for a break from Rome.

Q

What did the 10 articles do in 1536?

A

Deemed only three sacraments (baptism, penance and Eucharist) were necessary to achieve salvation.

Confession was praised but remission of sins via praying to saints was rejected.

This shows both the Catholic and Lutheran influences over the articles.

Q

How was the church reformation weakened by the end of Henry VIII’s reign.

A

Cromwell, who had secured the split from Rome, fell from power in 1540 and was replaced by a predominantly conservative council.

Acts such as the six articles strengthened Catholic traditions, such as transubstantiation.
