2.4 Henry VIII's Society Flashcards
What caused the Amicable Grant Rebellion in 1525?
People were opposed to Wolsey’s Amicable Grant, which forced the public to pay a subsidy to fund Henry VIII’s foreign affair as a gift to the King.
The majority of people were poor or unemployed and found the loan impossible to pay.
What were the events of the Amicable Grant Rebellion?
1000 people gathered at the Essex-Suffolk border refusing to pay the subsidy.
The Dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk were faced with a total of 4000 tax resistors.
What was the outcome of the Amicable Grant Rebellion?
The leaders of the rebellion were pardoned and the Amicable Grant was dropped.
Henry VIII had learnt he could not rely on the population to supply his war funds. He instead relied on other measures, such as looting the monasteries.
What caused the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536?
The leaders of the rebellion were opposed to Henry VIII’s attack on traditional ceremonies and dissolution of the monasteries.
The majority of rebels rebelled due to resent over taxation or tenant grievances.
