What is meant by “Open-field Husbandry”?
The tradition in which a landlord gave strips of land to tenants to farm on. This system abided by Common Rights, allowing tenants to use the land to feed livestock.
This system became under pressure by the emergence of enclosure.
What is meant by an Agrarian Society?
A community whose economy is based on producing and maintaining
crops and farmland.
Why was enclosure on the rise?
90% of England’s exports were cloth. Thus the demand for wool was high.
This meant it was far more profitable for landlords to fence off their land for pastoral farming (sheep), instead of renting their land for mixed farming use (animals and grain).
What did the 1485 and 1489 Navigation Acts do?
This forbade English merchants from using foreign ships if English ships were available.
This decreased the number of Hanseatic League ships that were used to export English goods.
What was the Hanseatic League?
A dominant German trade organisation and England’s main trade competitor in Northern Europe.
Had more power and prominence than England’s trade as England had been distracted during the War of the Roses.
What caused the trade embargo with the Netherlands/Burgundy?
Margaret Burgundy’s support of Perkin Warbeck caused the trade embargo.
What did John Cabot discover in 1497?
Newfoundland. He reported potential fishing ground there.
On a 2nd voyage the following year he never returned, presumed lost at sea.
