4 The Scientific Method Flashcards
systematic way of doing things and solving problems

what are the steps of the scientific method?
- observation
- problem identification
- research
- formulating hypothesis
- testing hypothesis
- drawing conclusion
explanation of an observation that can be tested by an experiment. It is a tentative answer to a problem.
hypothesis
states the exact opposite of what the researcher predicts or expects
null hypothesis
statement that suggests a potential result that the researcher may expect
alternative hypothesis
experiment part where you collect and analyze the data based on the results you’ve obtained
test the hypothesis
factors or conditions whose effect are being tested or monitored in the experiment
variables
factor or condition in the experiment that DOES NOT change and therefore stays as is
constant variable
condition in the experiment that is being changed, manipulated or adjusted
independent variable
effect that arises from the manipulated variable
dependent variable
part of the experiment where the independent variable is changed and all other conditions, the controlled variables are kept the same
fair test
set of samples that will either receive treatment or not. The more samples you have, the more valid the results will be
groups
group that receives no treatment and simulates the natural setting
controlled group
group that receives treatment which can be more than one depending on what is being tested
experimental group
