4 h) Synthetic Polymers Flashcards
Non-biodegradable
Cannot be broken down by bacteria or fungi in the environment.
Addition polymerisation
Polymerisation of a large number of monomers containing a carbon-carbon double bond, without anything else being formed.
Biopolyester
A polyester which is biodegradable.
Condensation polymerisation
Polymerisation of monomers in which each time two monomers combine, a small molecule such as water or hydrogen chloride is removed (e.g. a dicarboxylic acid and a diol).
Monomer
Molecules which can join up to form a polymer.
Polymer
A large molecule made when many small molecules (monomers) join together. Consists of many repeat units.
Repeat unit
The basic unit which repeats itself in a chain to form a polymer.
