2 f) Acids, Bases and Salt Preparation Flashcards
Acid
Source of hydrogen ions (H+) or proton donor.
Base
Neutralises acids by combining with the hydrogen ions in them. Soluble base is called an alkali, source of hydroxide ions (OH-) or proton acceptor.
Salt
A compound formed when a hydrogen is replaced by a metal or ammonium in an acid.
Crystallisation
A process in which a solute (soluble solid) is obtained from its solvent.
Filtrate
Liquid that comes through the filter paper.
Filtration
Process to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Indicator
Substance that has different colours depending on the pH.
Neutralisation reaction
Reaction in which acids react with bases or alkalis to produce salts.
Precipitate
A solid that is formed by a chemical reaction involving liquids or gases.
Residue
Solid left on the filter paper during filtration.
Titration (TA only)
Used to follow the course of a neutralisation reaction which can be used to find out how much of an acid/alkali reacts with a certain volume of an alkali/acid.
Insoluble
A substance which does not dissolve in a particular solvent.
