2 f) Acids, Alkalis & Titrations Flashcards
Acid
Source of hydrogen ions (H+) or proton donor.
Base
Neutralises acids by combining with the hydrogen ions in them. Soluble base is called an alkali, source of hydroxide ions (OH-) or proton acceptor.
Corrosive
Can damage living tissue.
End point
The point at which the indicator changes colour in a titration.
Indicator
Substance that has different colours depending on the pH.
Ion
Charged particle formed when an atom (or group of atoms) loses or gains electrons.
Neutralisation reaction
Reaction in which acids react with bases or alkalis to produce salts.
pH scale
Measure of how acidic or how alkaline a solution is.
Titration
Used to follow the course of a neutralisation reaction which can be used to find out how much of an acid/alkali reacts with a certain volume of an alkali/acid.
Dilute (dilution)
Added water to make a solution weaker.
