3B-Factors that effect enzymes Flashcards
KEY TERM - Optimal
The piont at which a given condition, the maximum function of an enzyme occurs. Also known as Optimum
KEY TERM - Saturation Piont
The point at which a substance (eg.an enzyme) cannot receive any more of another substance (eg. a substrate)
KEY TERM - Limiting Reagent
A reactant that prevents the rate of reaction from increasing.
KEY TERM - Limiting factor
A factor that prevents the rate of reaction from increasing
KEY TERM - Denature
The disruption of a molecules structure by an external factor such as heat
KEY TERM - Competitive Inhibition
The hinderance of an enzyme by blocking the active site and preventing the substrate from binding
KEY TERM - Enzyme inhibitor
A molecule that binds to and prevents an enzyme from functioning.
KEY TERM - Non-competitive Inhibitors
The hinderence of an enzyme binding to an allosteric site and changing the shape of the active site to prevent the substrate from binding.
KEY TERM - allosteric site
a region on an enzyme that is not an active site
KEY TERM - Reversible Inhibition
enzyme inhibition that involves weaker bonds that can be overcome
KEY TERM - Irreversible Inhibition
Enzyme inhibition that involves stronger bonds that cannot be broken
