3.7 components of biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity definition
The total variation that exists among living organisms
Components of biodiversity
Genetic diversity
Species diversity
Ecosystem diversity
Genetic diversity definition
The variety and frequency of different alleles within a population of organisms.
Population
All the organisms of one species in an ecosystem.
How is genetic diversity lost
By individuals or populations of a species dying out.
Disadvantage of losing genetic diversity
Could limit the species ability to adapt to a change in environment, meaning they are more likely to go extinct.
Species diversity
The number of different species in an ecosystem and the relative abundance of these species.
Components of species diversity
Relative abundance and species richness
Species richness
The number of different species in the ecosystem
Relative abundance
The size of the population of each species in relation to the whole ecosystem.
How does species diversity decrease
By a dominant species being of high abundance, other species must be of lower abundance due to competition for resources.
Ecosystem diversity
The variety of different ecosystems within an area.
