what is a trade union mean?
an organisation established to protect and imporve the working conditions and pay of employees
what do trade unions do?
- negotiate through collective bargaining e.g. strikes
- give employees advice
what are the pros of trade unions?
- employees -> am opportunity to feel represented and heard
- increase working relationships between employees and employers
what are the cons to trade unions?
- employees may be upset or frustrated as some benefit from their actions with little input e.g. they don’t strike and lose wages
- employees have to try to respond to requests while still doing what they think is right and juggling resources
what are the aims of teacher unions?
- securing benefits for teachers
- promote the power of education
- to influence education policy
- campaigning v=the voice of teachers
what has been done so far by teacher unions?
- helped achieve 53% turnout
- secured a 6.5% increase in teachers pay
what is a work council mean?
workers and managers meet to discuss issues relating to:

what are the pros of a work council?
- builds better relationships with leadership
- internally resolve problems
what are the cons of a work council?
- may feel un-listened to and invalidated in their opinions
- may not lead to significant change
