the process of dealing with or controlling things or people, the responsibility for and control of a company or organisation

what is an autocratic leadership?
- management make decisions with little or no input from employees
- dictate work methods and processes
- e.g. british army
what are the pros of an autocratic leadership?
- clear chain of command in hierarchy
- allows for quick decision making
- useful in stressful situations
what are the cons of an autocratic leadership?
- may impact employee motivation
- ignores creative solutions to problems
- relies heavily on competency of leader
- creates a culture of dependency -> employees can’t think for themselves
what is a democratic leadership?
- allows employees to help in decision making process
- democratic leaders decides which staff gets to contribute to the decisions made
- democratic leaders are persuasive
- one of the most effective leadership styles as it can lead to higher productivity levels

what are the pros of a democratic leadership?
- employees are motivated
- allows employees to grow and develop into their roles
- business benefits from ideas
what are the cons of a democratic leadership?
- staff may have their own agender
- decision making may take time
what is a paternalistic leadership?
- makes the right decision for employees that they are responsible for
- dominant authority figure who expects loyalty and trust
- takes the welfare of staff into account when making decisions

what are the pros of a paternalistic leadership?
- loyalty from employees
- low rate of labour turnover, reducing recruitment costs
- effective in low-skilled and inexperienced workers
what are the cons of a paternalistic leadership?
- employees can become demotivated if leader makes the wrong decision ,therefore productivity suffers
- still a dictatorial style of leadership
- doesn’t use employees skill and knowledge
what is a laissez-faire leadership?
- employees can carry out activities and make decisions freely
- work in relaxed environment
- employees are expected to solve problems as they are the expert in that area
- leader is still responsible for the decisions made

- suitable for creative environments
- encourages innovation, often found in high-tech companies

- may lead to poor productivity
