3.5 symbiosis Flashcards
symbiosis
an intimate relationship that has co-evolved between members of two different species
parasitism
a parasite benefitting in terms of energy or nutrients where as-its host is harmed by the loss of these resources
parasite has a limited metabolism which means
many parasites cannot survive if they lose contact with their host
why do parasites not cause there host to die
death of host causes death of the parasite
direct contact
parasite is passed person to person by physical contact
head lice
release of resistance stages
parasite survives in adverse conditions for a long period of time until they com into contact with a new host
cat fleas have resistant larvae and pupae
use of a vector
a vector is an organism that does not cause disease itself but which spreads infection by transferring pathogens from one host to another
plasmodium
direct life cycle
some parasite lifecycles are simple and only involve one host
head lice
indirect lifecycle defintion
others involve intermediate hosts to allow them to complete their lifecycle
indirect lifecycle summary
more highly evolved then parasites
use a primary host for sexual stage of reproduction
also uses a secondary host
new primary host becomes infected when it consumes the secondary host
advantages of multiple hosts
increases reproductive capacity
increase chance of survival
mutualism
both mutualistic partner species benefit in an interdependent relationship or one species benefits but the other isn’t harmed
clown fish anemones mutualistic relationship
anemone sting provide the fish with protection from predators
the fish defend the anemones from the butterflyfish that eat them. also absorb food scraps from the fish.
