3.5 Coastal Transport And Deposition Flashcards
Lateral shift
The net movement of sediment up and down the beach
4 marine sediment transportation methods
Traction
Saltation
Suspension
Solution
Traction
Relatively large and heavy rocks rolling along the seabed
Saltation
Smaller lighter rocks bounce along the seabed
Suspension
Lighter sediment carried in waves
Solution
Sediment that is dissolved moving in the waves
Spit
Long narrow feature made of sand or shingle. Extends from land to sea. Caused by longshore drift, conjoined with a change in direction of water eg. A river estuary.
2 types of beaches
Swash-aligned and drift-aligned beaches.
Swash-aligned: sediment moves up and down the beach with little lateral transfer.
Drift-aligned: sediment transferred along the coast due to longshore drift
Offshore bars
Aka sandbars. Submerged/partially exposed ridges of sand or coarse sediment. Created by offshore waves and destructive waves eroding the beach and depositing it offshore.
Barrier beaches/bars
When a beach/spit extends across a bay to join two headlands
Barrier island
Occurs when a beach becomes separated from the mainland
Tombolo
Beach forming a connection between a small island and the mainland.
Cuspate foreland
Triangular-shaped headland. Occurs when longshore drift occurs from both directions of a coast.
Pioneer species
First colonising plants of a dune
Plant succession timeline
Embryo dunes, fore-dunes, yellow dunes, grey dunes, dune slack, mature dunes
