1.11 Managing The Impacts Of Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
Land-use zoning
Process where local government planners regulate the usage of land eg. Industrial, residential. Hazard maps are used to create these
Diverting lava flows
Can be through building barriers and digging channels. Fairly ineffective due to unpredictability of lava flows
GIS mapping
Used in all stages of disaster management cycle. Can be used to see location of evacuation points, towns and cities etc
High tech monitoring
Method of hazard adaptation strategy. Examples are GIS, warning systems, satellites & mobile phones. Used in any stages of the cycle.
Crisis mapping
Uses crowd sourced information to accurately map areas struck by disaster. Can be used before or after a disaster occurs
Modelling hazard impact
Computer models can predict impacts of hazard events. Allows scientists to compare effects of different scenarios. Can aid is developing plans and strategies
Public education
Raises public awareness to reduce vulnerability and prevent hazards from becoming disasters. Includes; practicing emergency procedures, creation of emergency preparedness kits, providing educational materials
Emergency aid
Immediate necessities, food, clean water & shelter
Short term aid
Restoring water supplies, providing temporary shelter.
Long term aid
Reconstructing buildings, redeveloping economy of the affected areas
Role of NGOs
Help in providing aid, can remain in affected areas for years after the initial disaster
