1.4 Understanding Volcanic Eruptions Flashcards
Lava
When magma emerges from the earth’s surface
Pyroclastic flow
Mixture of dense hot rock, lava, ash and gases ejected from a volcano. Fast moving. Very destructive.
Tephra
Pieces of rock and Ash erupting from a volcano during eruption.
Lahar
Masses of rock, mud and water that travel quickly down a volcanoes side. Similar to landslides
Volcanic Explositivity Index (VEI)
Describes and compares magnitudes of volcanic eruptions. Uses a logarithmic scale from 1 to 8. Includes factors such as height & mass of tephra and ash fall, Length of eruption
Examples of precursors
Small earthquakes, changes to surface of volcano. Changes to the tilt of a volcano.
