Q

the United States’ wine laws

A
  • the US’ GI system is based on the Amercan Viticultural Area (AVA)
  • there are federal laws specifying the minimum percentages of grapes that must come from a single grape variety, vintage or AVA to allow these terms to appear on the label
  • many states also have their own laws that may differ from the federal limits

wines that do not qualify for an AVA:
- the name of a state (ie California), or county (ie Napa County) may appear on the label
- the laws for labelling with a vintage & geographical origin are often more lenient for these wines than those with AVA status
