3.1 Community Ecology Flashcards
What does niche mean?
-biotic and abiotic resources that a species uses:
-what, where, when, and how it is used
What is the difference between a realized niche and a fundamental niche?
Realized niche- where it goes and what it actually uses
Fundamental niche- where it would go and what it would use if possible
What does mutualism mean?
Both species benefit from their interactions.
What does commensalism mean?
One species has a positive benefit and the other has no benefit or loss.
What does parasitism mean?
One species has benefits, while the other species is getting harmed from it.
What does competition mean?
Both species are fighting for the same resource, lose for both.
What does facultative and obligatory mean?
Facultative- 2 species receive benefits from each other but they can survive without them.
Obligatory- 2 species entirely rely on each other to survive.
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a little? Overlap a lot?
Little- there will be small competition and eventually they will move to separate areas
Lot- one species will go extinct, move away, or will take a while but they will split resources.
Barnacles grow on the whale and filter food from water as the whale swims. They do not affect the whale. What type of interspecific interaction is this?
Commensalism (+/0)
Lichens contain both fungi and algae. The fungi break matter down into nutrients and algae provides sugars via photosynthesis. What type of interspecific interaction is this?
Mutualism (+/+)
