1.1 Intro to Biology Flashcards
What does PMC stand for? What are their functions?
Program- Responsible for the functions and it is passed through each organism.
Metabolism- How energy is created then used.
Container- Cell membrane separating living things from the environment.
What are the levels of organization from smallest to largest?
Atom, Molecule, Organelle, Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biome, Biosphere.
What’s the difference between a population and a community?
A population is members of the same species, while a community is multiple populations and their interactions in an area.
What does CER stand for and how does it work?
Claim- conclusion that addresses the original question.
Evidence- piece of data that supports the claim.
Reasoning- explanation of how the data supports your claim.
If an organism doesn’t have metabolism, is it considered living?
No, you need program, container, AND metabolism for it to be considered living.
What is the smallest level of organism that is considered living?
A cell.
What level of organization is all living things in Tippecanoe?
Community.
What level of organization is a chloroplast?
Organelle.
What level of organization is bullfrogs in a celery bog?
Population.
If a cat was missing, what part of CER would this fill? “The dog is seen digging in the dirt and covering up pet tags to hide the body of the cat.”
Evidence because the dog is seen doing these actions.
Write a CER determining if viruses are living or nonliving.
Claim- Viruses are nonliving because they lack many features making an organism to be considered living.
Evidence- It is lacking an energy source and carbon source. Without these, they can’t metabolize.
Reasoning-If they can’t metabolize, then they don’t fill in all requirements for the PMC model.
Define ecosystem and give an example.
An ecosystem is a community (population interaction in it’s area) and all of the abiotic factors like rocks. An example of an ecosystem would be Lake Michigan.
