1.3 Experimental Design Flashcards
What do smaller error bars mean?
Smaller error bars mean less difference between the data.
What do overlap and no overlap show in error bars?
Overlap shows similarity and no overlap shows difference.
What is a control group?
A control group is the standards at which comparisons are made to in an experiment.
What are the two components of a hypothesis?
1- Specific reason for a phenomenon
2- Write a testable statement
Identify the independent and dependent variable in the following: Does the amount of iron in the water affect plant growth?
Amount of iron in water
Identify the dependent variable in the following: Does the amount of iron in the water affect plant growth?
Plant growth
Why is a control group important?
If you don’t have a untouched variable to be compared to the others, then you are comparing changed things to each other, and you don’t know its starting point.
Write a hypothesis for the following question: Does the amount of iron in the water affect plant growth?
Ex: If the <independent> <increases> then, the <dependent> will <increase> because...</increase></dependent></increases></independent>
How are statements considered to be strong?
They have a lot of information, and they are very specific with it.
What happens if you have more than one independent variable?
You can not tell which variable is affecting the outcome.
