3. Personality Flashcards
Explain the 5 theories regarding personality
Psychodynamic theory (personality coming from unconscious) Humanistic Theory (people will grow as long as supported) Trait theory (with traits) Social Learning Theory (Personality come from conditioning) Interactional Theory (personality and situation make behavior)
What are the two elements that make up perfectionism
Perfectionistic striving (fullfilling own standards) Perfectionistic concerns (fullfilling standards others set)
What kind of perfectionism is best
Perfectionism that is focused on striving (own standards) was best for performance, and mixed perfectionism was unhealthy if not combined ith other perfectionism
What are the 4 traits of mental toughness
Perseverance (not giving up)
Hope (having the desire for a possible outcome)
Resilience (bouncing back from failure)
Optimism (thinking positive things will occur)
What emotions are measured with the POMS profile of mood state
Tension Depression Anger Vigour Fatigue Confusion
What is an iceberg profile
In the POMS, some atheletes score low on all profiles except for vigor, which is positive
Evaluate the POMS measure
The poms is a bad measure as it doesnt have good predictive validity and does not predict athleteic achievement
Only for open skill sport (where environment plays role) it has larger effects
What is emotional intelligence and how is it linked to performance
Emotional intelligence is the skill to assess perceive and manage own and others emotion
It is possitively linked to performance because of better usage of skills to cope with high pressure and see events as more controllable.
What are the reasons for the differences in personality in different types of sport, level of achievement or positions of athletes
One reason could be that personality influences how people interpret and cope with stressors
Another reason shows that the traits could be linked to physical appearance and performance
Why are personality measures bad
Because of social desirabilty bias and also because of margin of error
How does sport change your personality and what study found this
It can change your personality because of for example a change in self efficacy
The study that foudn this was a quasi experimental yoga based intervention for self efficacy
What are the big 5 personality traits
Openeness to new experience Conscientiousness extraversion agreeableness neurotism
What are the three types of coping relevant for sport psychology
Task oriented coping (manage situational demands and internal states like relaxation, analysis etc)
Distraction Oriented Coping (moving away momentarely)
Disengagement Oriented Coping (disangege from processes that could lead to goal achievement)
What OCEAN traits were correlated with each coping style
Task oriented coping (Openness, Extraverion, Agreeableness)
Distraction Oriented Coping (negative Conscientiousness, negative extraversion, negative agreeableness, positive neurotism)
Disengagement Oriented Coping (negative consientiousness, negative agreeableness, positie extraversion, positve neurotism)
Explain the interaction effects between coping style and OCEAN trait
Openness as a mediator between neurotism and task oriented coping
Neuroticm as a mediator betwee extravsion and task oriented coping
Consciuentiousness as a meditaor between agreeabkeness and distraction coping
