2c Flashcards
what does a catalyst do?
changes the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up
what is a enzyme?
it is a biological catalyst- a protein that speeds up a chemical reaction
what requires enzymes?
1- respiration
2- protein synthesis
3- photosynthesis
what does the replication of DNA require?
it requires DNA polymerases
what would happen if DNA polymerases weren’t present
it would take a long time for the bases to attach and a new DNA chain to form
state 4 factors that affect enzyme function
-temperature
-ph
-substrate concentration
-enzyme concentration
describe the effect of temp on the rate of an enzyme reaction
as the temperature increases so does the rate of reaction, until it exceeds optimum temperature the enzyme denatures and the rate of reaction decreases
why does the rate of enzyme reaction increase when the temp increases?
the particles have more kinetic energy increasing the chance of collisions between molecules
if temp increases above optimum temp, how does this affect enzyme function?
the active site will be distorted as the enzyme denatures and so it will no longer fit in the substrate
describe the affect of ph on the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction
the rate of enzyme catalysed reaction is fastest at the optimum ph, if the ph is too high or low the enzyme will work less efficiently
