2b - cell stucture Flashcards
what is the cell membrane?
the structure around cells that controls what enters and leaves the cell
what is the cell wall?
a structure made of cellulose that surrounds plant cells, giving them support and shape
what are chloroplasts?
organelles found only in plant cells and are where photosynthesis takes place
what is mitochondira?
organelles in plant and animal cells and are where respiration takes place
what are chromosomes?
long DNA molecules found in the nucleus of a cell
what is the nucleus?
the organelle in plant and animal cells that contains the genetic material
what is photosynthesis?
the chemical process by which plants use light, water and carbon dioxide, to create glucose and oxygen
what are ribosomes?
small organelles found in cells and are where protien synthesis takes place
name the different structures in cells
- nucleus
- cytoplasm
- cell membrane
- mitochondria
- ribosomes
- cell wall
- chloroplasts
- vacuole
what can stem cells do?
they can develop into specialised cells by the process of differentiation
