1a charecteristics of living organisms Flashcards
in order fro something to be considered living what criteria must it fufil?
MRS H GREN:
- movement
- respiration
- sensitivity
- homeostasis
- growth
- reproduction
- excretion and
nutrition
what happens if something does not follow mrs h gren?
it is either dead or non-living
what is an example of a non-living thing?
a virus
why do organisms need food?
to provide energy
how do plants get nutrition?
they use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and glucose, this is called photosynthesis
how do animals get nutrition?
Animals consume other living organisms in order to obtain the energy they require. They do this via digestion
what is the difference between autotroph and heterotroph?
autotroph produce their own energy via photosynthesis e.g. plants and algae
heterotroph consume other organisms to get energy e.g. animals and fungi
what is respiration?
Respiration is a chemical reaction carried out in all living organisms
what is the equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen
->
carbon dioxide + water
what is excretion?
Excretion is the removal of toxic materials and substances from organisms
what are waste products excreted by animals?
- Carbon dioxide
- Water
- Urea
what are waste products excreted by plants?
- Oxygen
- Carbon dioxide
- Water
what is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to keep optimum conditions.
what is movement?
Movement is an action by an organism causing a change of position or place
what is sensitivity?
The sensitivity of an organism refers to its ability to detect and respond to stimuli in its surroundings
