What is the use of polish?
Used to create a very high gloss, deep colour and tough surface
What’s the most common type of polishing?
French polishing which consists of applying many thin coats of polish (Shellac dissolved in alcohol) using a rubbing pad
What are oils used for?
Used to treat and protect wood by seeping into the surface of the wood and enhancing the natural wood grain
What is Linseed oil?
a yellowish oil extracted from the seeds of flax and used as a drying oil in paint and varnishes, printing inks, and synthetic resins
What are Danish Teak oils?
a blend of oils and resins that seals, feeds and finishes all types of wood, without leaving a surface film to chip or scratch
What is wood stain?
a type of paint as it is made from the same three primary ingredients (pigment, solvent, and binder) but is mainly composed of dye and is used to enhance the natural colour of a wood
What are oil dyes?
Usually come ready mixed and are classified by the type of wood they most closely match
What are alcohol stains?
- Come as a powder and must be mixed to the right colour
- Because they are alcohol-based, these stains can also be mixed with shellac polish for colour matching
What are pigment stains?
They add a semi-opaque colour to the wood and are best used to disguise the orginal look and feel of the wood.
What is varnish?
- A transparent, hard and protective finish used in wood finishing but also for other materials
- Varnish finishes are usually glossy but many be designed to produce stain or semi-gloss sheens
What is wax?
A waterproof finish used to protect wood and will darken with age
Beeswax is commonly used to protect furniture surfaces
