1.2 Energy Flashcards
What are the three fossil energy sources?
- Oil
- Coal
- Natural gas
How are fossil energy sources formed?
They are non-renewable resources that form when prehistoric plants and animals die and are gradually buried by layers of rock.
What does the different types of fossil forming depend on?
- what combination of organic matter was present
- how long it was buried and what temperature
- pressure conditions existed as time passed
What are the negatives of burning fossil fuels?
- creates carbon dioxide
- this adds to climate change by making the earth warmer than it should be
- once fossil fuels are gone, they can’t be replaced
Where is nuclear energy released from?
From the nucleus, the core of atoms, made up of protons and neutrons
How can nuclear energy be produced?
- fission - when nuclei of atoms split into several parts
- fusion - when nuclei fuse together
How is energy made through nuclear fission?
- inside nuclear power plants, nuclear reactors and their equipment contain and control the chain reactions, most commonly fuelled by uranium-235, to produce heat through fission
- the heat warms the reactor’s cooling agent, typically water, to produce steam
- the steam is then challenged to spin turbines, activating an electric generator to create low-carbon electricity
What is renewable energy?
- a natural source of energy sources that can be used to create electricity
What is hydro-electric power?
- uses energy from moving water to drive turbines and generate Electricity
- hydro-electric Power schemes use water stored in dams
- tidal and wave energy can also be used to drive turbines
What is solar power?
- solar panels collect energy from the Sun to create Electricity
What is wind energy?
- wind turns turbines to create Electricity
- wind farms are located on high ground or out at sea, where the wind is strongest
What is geothermal energy?
- heat generated below the Earth’s surface
- in active volcanic areas, it can be used to heat water
- the steam produced can power generators and create Electricity
What is biomass energy?
- energy generated by burning living or once-living organisms (like dung or plant waste)
- it is considered renewable because Biomass growth removes CO2 from the atmosphere
- It stores CO2 it in the soil, plants or trees
What are the two energy storage systems?
- batteries
- kinetic-pumped storage system
What are the two types of batteries?
- single-use Batteries, sometimes referred to as Primary Types, are commonlyAlkalinebatteries
- rechargeable batteries
