2.9 Finishing - Paper & Board Flashcards
What is the process of varnishing?
- Fine varnish can be sprayed onto the surface of card
- When dry this gives a gloss finish and helps protect the printing underneath
- The printing and colour work must be completed before this process takes place
- Folding a package takes place after the varnish has been applied
What are the two types of varnish?
- oil-based
- water-based
What is laminating?
Laminating produces a high gloss finish on card and provides good protection against damage as it’s normally waterproof
What is a con of using laminating?
It’s much more expensive than varnishing
What is a pro for laminating?
Gives more protection to the card than varnishing
What is the laminating process?
- The printed card is placed inside a plastic film/sleeve
- It’s then placed in the tray of a laminating machine which pulls the card and film through its heater and rollers
- The heater warms the film almost to melting point and the rollers press the film sleeve until it’s sealed
- When the card reappears in the out tray, the finished item looks glossy and professional
What is embossing?
Embossing involves raising areas of a card surface above level of the rest. The images stand out from the card as it has been produced by a stamp which presses the card to the correct shape.
Is embossing expensive?
Yes, because the printing process gives the card a 3D effect
What is the process of embossing?
- The embossing tool is aligned with the printed shape and the mallet is then used to strongly tap the embossing tool
- The card rests upon a rubber base to absorb impact from the mallet
