1.6 Manufactured Boards Flashcards
What are manufactured boards?
- Manufactured boards are timber sheets, which are produced by gluing wood layers or wood fibres together.
- Often made use of waste wood materials.
Why are manufactured boards developed mainly for industrial production?
They can be made in very large sheets of consistent quality
Are manufactured boards expensive?
No so they are often used as instead of real wood
What is veneer and its use?
Veneer is the thin layer of real wood and its used to cover manufactured boards as it improves their appearance.
What are the four types of board?
- MDF
- Plywood
- Chipboard
- Blockboard
What is MDF?
- A smooth and even surfaced board made from combining wood powder and PVA glue
- Easily machined and painted
What are the uses of MDF?
- Used mainly for furniture and interior panelling due to its easy machining qualities
- Often veneered or painted
What is Plywood?
A very strong board, which is constructed of layer of veneer or piles which are glued at 90 degrees to each other
What are the uses of Plywood?
- Used for strong structural panelling board used in building construction
- Furniture making
What is chipboard?
- A board made from chips of wood glued together
- Usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate
What are the uses of chipboard?
- Used for kitchen and bedroom furniture usually veneered or covered with a plastic laminate (melamine)
- Shelving and general DIY work
What is Blockboard?
Similar to Plywood but the central layer is made from strips of timber
What are the uses of blockboard?
- Used where heavier structures are needed
- Common for shelving and worktops
What are the 6 types of knock-down fittings?
- Plastic Corner Block
- Natural Wood Fitting
- Two Block Fitting
- Rigid Joint
- Scan Fittings
- Cam Locks
What is a Plastic Corner Block?
- The corner block is pressed against two pieces of wood and screws are used to fix the blocks into position
- A relatively strong joint that can be disassembled using a screwdriver
What is a Natural Wood Fitting?
- An effective and low-cost joint that uses a piece of Softwood, which is drilled and countersunk screws attached
- This gives a cheap and effective known-down joint
What is a Two Block Fitting?
- A strong joint that uses plastic fittings
- A bolt passes through the first fitting into the thread of the second
- As the bolt is tightened, it draws the two fittings together
What is a Rigid Joint?
- A strong joint because it uses Injection Moulded plastic fittings.
- Screws pass through the four holes which hold the sides at each corner firmly together
What are scan fittings?
- A strong joint that can either permanent or temporary joints
- The cylinder is inserted into the first side of a cabinet in a pre-drilled hole
- The screw is then pushed throught the hole in the second side until it meets the cylinder
What are cam locks?
- A disk fits into a recess in the first side of the cabinet and rotates by inserting a screwdriver into the slot in its side
- The shaft is screwed into the second side of the cabinet
