2.7 Internet Connection And Network Types Flashcards
Satellite Internet
- high cost relative to terrestrial networking
- 50 Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload are common speeds
- high latency
- connection affected by rain cloud and other natural phenomena
Fiber Internet
- fastest option
- high cost: expensive equipment and difficult repair
- large installation in the WAN core
Cable Broadband Internet
- internet connection using the same cable for television
- DOCSIS
- broadband: multiple frequencies and different traffic types
- 50 - 1000 Mbps is common
- bi-directional data communication over hybrid fiber coaxial connection
DSL Internet
- uses telephone line
- most widely available but slower than cable
- speed depends on distance from the service provider
ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
- most common type of DSL
- download speed is faster than upload speed = asymmetric
- 200 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up are common
Cellular Internet
- 3g, 4g, and 5g
- tethering
- hotspot: turns phone into a temporary router
WISP
Wireless Internet Service Provider
- terrestrial internet access using wireless
- often found in rural or remote locations
- requires and outdoor antenna
LAN
Local Area Network
- network in a building or group of buildings
- usually ethernet or 802.11
WAN
Wide Area Network
- connects multiple LANs across a distance
- can span multiple cities or counties
- WWAN (Wireless WAN): typically uses cellular technology
PAN
Personal Area Network
- Bluetooth, IR, NFC
ex. connecting to wireless headset
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network
- typically covers a city or a large campus
- often government owned
- bigger than LAN, smaller than WAN
SAN
Storage Area Network
- network of storage devices
- block-level access
- requires a lot of bandwidth
WLAN
Wireless Local Area Network
- 802.11
- usually within a building or localized area
- expand coverage with additional access points
