Information Management
The process of controlling information so it is used effectively.
Collecting, storing and retrieving
For example, filling in customer detail forms at a swimming club, entering the information onto a database then searching to find all members who have joined in the last week.
Manipulating and processing
For example, calculation of numerical data, generating a graph, filtering out certain information
Analysing
Looking for patterns or trends in data
Securing
Making sure that stored information is secure and safe for example encryption.
Transmitting
Sending information to someone else within or outside the organisation eg by email attachment, online collaboration or uploading to a website.
Impact of information management
Cost of additional security such as anti-virus software, extra servers, back up locations. These costs are often offset by the benefits gained by processing the information.
Anti-malware
Software designed to prevent, detect, and eradicate malicious software such as a worm.
