1.4 The internet Flashcards
What is the internet?
A network of interconnected networks across the globe.
Type of connection - copper cable
Based on electrical conductivity - low cost, slow
Type of connection - Optical fibre
Thin glass fibre used to transmit pulses of light
Range
Distance over which a signal can be sent
Speed
Rate at which data is transferred over the internet
Storage capacity
Amount of data different connection types can transfer over the internet
Type of connection - Microwave
Can only send to devices that are in direct line of sight
Type of connection - Satellite
Able to send signals from the boundaries of space
Broadband
A high-data-rate connection to the Internet
Mobile-data networks
Wireless connectivity using your network data
Wireless hotspot
An area with an accessible wireless network
Latency
Latency is the delay when sending data across a network
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be sent across a network at once.
Contention
Refers to whether a network is dedicated(I contended) or shared between users(contended)
Connection Characteristics
Strength, Range, latency, Bandwidth, Storage Capacity, Contention
