Paper
A traditional form of information storage eg handwritten notes, maps, reports.
Optical media
A type of media used to store data which is read by a laser such as a CD or a DVD.
Magnetic media - Fixed hard drive
Has read/write heads, processes data quickly can be damaged easily.
Solid-state media
Stores data in circuitry eg SSD cards.
Cloud storage
Data that is stored on remote servers accessed from the internet.
Magnetic media - Portable hard disk drive -
Has read/write heads, can be used on any computer via USB port, easy to misplace have stolen.
Magnetic media - magnetic tape
Data stored in the form of binary numbers, serial access, very large storage capacities, slow data access - most frequently used for backups and archiving.
Mutability
The ability to change the content of a storage medium
Robustness
Storage media that does not break easily.
Storage capacity
The maximum amount of data that can be stored on a storage medium
