2.2. Gastric Disease - Gastritis Flashcards
Is Gastritis more common in Males or Females?
Males
What are the 3 methods Gastritis can be a result of?
A - Autoimmune Disease
B - Bacterial Infection
C - Chemical Toxicity
What is the pathology of Autoimmune Gastritis?
Autoantibodies react with the Gastric Mucosa causing inflammation
What is the pathology of Bacterial Infection Gastritis?
A bacterial reaction causes an Immune Mediated Inflammatory Response
(This is usually H. Pylori)
What is the pathology of Chemical Toxicity Gastritis?
Toxic Chemicals irratating the Gastric Mucosa, causing inflammation
What are the 3 areas where Gastritis can occur?
- The Antrum of the Stomach
- The Corpus of the Stomach
- A Mix of Both
What will Gastritis in the Antrum of the Stomach cause?
An increase in Gastric Acid Production
What can an increase in Gastric Acid production lead to?
- Peptic Ulceration (Common)
2. Gastric Cancer (Low Risk)
What will Gastritis in the Corpus of the Stomach cause?
A decrease in Gastric Acid Production
What can a decrease in Gastric Acid production lead to?
Gastric Atrophy
What can Gastric Atrophy lead to?
Gastric Cancer
What will a Mix of Antral and Corpusal Gastritis cause?
No change in the acid levels, so there will be no significant disease
What are the Clinical Signs of Antral Gastritis?
- Increased Gastric Acid
- Symptoms of Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)
- Peptic Ulceration
What are the Clinical Signs of Corpusal Gastritis?
- Decreased Gastric Acid
- A Decrease in Interleukin-1 (IL-1)
- A Decrease in Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF)
- Gastric Cancer
Why is there a decrease in Interleukin-1 (IL-1)?
There is no known reason
