What was the Remonstrance that was published by army leadership?
It declared that King Charles was guilty of high treason for starting the 2nd Civil War and that he should be put on trial for his crimes.
What was Pride’s Purge?
Following the Remonstrance, Parliament voted to continue negotiations with Charles but troops arrested 45 MPs and excluded 186 from the HOC in order to rid Parliament of moderate MPs. Those who remained were called the Rump Parliament.
What happened at Charles’ trial?
Charles was tried by 135 Commissioners in January 1649. He refused to accept that any Court possessed the power to place a divinely ordained monarch on trial so he would not answer the charges made against him.
What was the verdict at Charles’ trial?
He was found guilty of all charges and was sentenced to death. He was executed on the 30th January 1649.
